What is Carrom?
Carrom is a game that is played on a smooth wooden square table. It uses flat round carrom Coins (shaped like checker pieces) to play with. Each player has 9 pieces that they need to pocket the coins. There are 9 black 9 white and 1 red carrom Coin.You try to put each piece into the corner pockets with the larger white Coins called the striker. The first person to sink all 9 of their colour wins.
The Extra PieceThe red Coin can be pocketed at any time and it gives you 5 extra points. However, when you pocket the red, you must immediately Pocket your colour coin or the red ball comes back to play.The game goes to 29. After each round, the person that wins gets points by the amount of their opponents balls left on the table. If they pocket the red ball also, they would receive and extra 5 points.It is a popular game and there are even tournaments around India.
Rules :-
1. The game can be played as doubles as well as singles encounter. The former involves two members of the same side sitting across each other against two other players. The team which wins the toss starts off first and they start with white coins.2. With the help of a striker usually bigger than the carrom coins, each player takes turns and strikes it in attempt to pocket the coins into one of the four holes.3. Center queen which is red in color is worth more and in order to be claimed needs to be followed with another coin.4. Pocketing the striker accidentally means the side loses one of their scored coins along with a turn, which need to be placed back into the game. If the striker goes into the hole along with a coin, two coins are placed back into the game and the player doesn’t lose his turn.5. Sinking the team’s last coin beforehand while the queen is still in the game means the side loses the game. Eventually the goal is to score all of their coins along with the queen before the opponents does it in order to win the game.
In Conclusion
It was a pretty fun game and I can see why so many men play this game. We won our little doubles match, no thanks to me and I left the experts to play on their own. It looks like serious business and I am sure that the men are not thrilled with having a girl with bad aim join their party.Who knows, maybe if I intrude enough, by the end of our Indian adventure I just may be a Carrom shark my self.
